Is Jesus the center of the Universe? (A Christmas truth)

By Pastor Dean Honeycutt

Mitchell County

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. And for most of us Christ will be at the center of our holiday. However, for far too many people the true meaning of Christmas is lost in tradition and the deception of commercialism.

The first Christmas, the angel of the Lord brought a simple message to the shepherds keeping watch over their flock by night, “for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2: 8,11) A very simple message with profound meaning which is still true today, Jesus is the reason for the season.

Though the world at that time may not have recognized the supremacy of Christ, the angels certainly did, as they proclaimed, “glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace goodwill toward man.” (v.14) “Glory to God in the highest” is used in a spatial sense the “highest heaven.” As Buzz Lightyear would say “to infinity and beyond.” So, in all infinite space and earth Jesus Christ is the glory of God and the image of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15; Revelation 21:23) Jesus is the center of everything seen and unseen.

Secular science tells us the observable universe is an infinite amount of space around you. In every direction it is unending. No matter how far I travel in any direction I would never reach the end, space is endless. So, where is the center of space? Secular science tells me I am at the center of my universe, the center is relative to my position. So, this model and idea places man at the center. And this is the way most people think. We tend to see ourselves in the center and our family, possessions, and needs revolving around us.

But, if we are at the center, where does that leave Jesus? That leaves Jesus revolving around us with all the other things that are going on in our life. It is sad to say but Jesus is often only one of many things in our life. It is said, if you want to know where someone’s priorities lie see where they spend their money and their time.

What the world and secular science fail to realize is the spiritual reality of that which is visible and invisible. That Jesus Christ is the center of all things and is not confined by time, space, or matter, Jesus is eternal and before all things in relation to time and all things seen and not seen exist, and continue to exist, and are held together because of Jesus. In other words, Jesus is the center of all things and He is the glue that holds all things in their place.  Colossians 1:16 (KJV 1900)

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Colossians 1:17 (KJV 1900)

17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Wow what an amazing truth. The Bible teaches Christ is supreme in all things. The way we really enjoy Christmas is putting our number one priority on the Number One priority and that is Jesus Christ. Acknowledging the supremacy of Christ keeps my focus where it needs to be. If you teach your children the supremacy of Christ then they will understand the true meaning of Christmas. If one day everything we know about traditional Christmas were taken away, Christmas would still be Christmas and have meaning and purpose. Why? Because it is based on the person of Jesus Christ and not what the world has made it out to be. May you have a wonderful Christmas, focus on Jesus Christ and your Christmas will be full because all fullness dwells in Jesus.

Merry Christmas,

Honeycutt family.
