Get Away the Right Way

Without a doubt, our culture is way too busy. Every day, we find ourselves scrambling in a mad dash against time to attempt to accomplish more than we will most likely ever be able to accomplish. It seems that every time we turn around, another deadline is looming around the corner. We finish one just to face another, and the daily grind continues.

God designed our bodies with the need for rest. He created the world in six literal twenty-four-hour days and then rested on the seventh. Obviously, God was not fatigued from creation, but He exemplified the importance of rest and instituted the principle of working six days and resting on the seventh. This is how God designed our bodies to function.

In addition, Jesus also exemplified throughout His lifetime the need to simply “get away from it all.” Matthew 14:23 describes a time “when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.” At other times, he instructed his disciples, “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat” (Matthew 6:31). Clearly, there were times when it was necessary to get away to obtain much-needed rest and relaxation.Resting in Hammock

Most people look forward to the summer months because it provides one such opportunity. Whether it is a trip to the beach, the mountains, or some other favorite destination, such times are often greatly anticipated because they provide us with an opportunity to “get away.” These times can be great sources of encouragement and strength, as we take a much-needed break from the stress of life.

However, we must avoid the ease of taking a break from the things of God. We can be assured that Satan does not respect our time away from it all and take a week off from trying to tempt us to sin or ruin our testimony. Furthermore, it is possible to gain physical rest but remains spiritually malnourished. We must not allow ourselves to drift from God, even when we are on vacation. This summer as you get away, I challenge you to do so the right way. Determine to spend some quality time each day with the Lord in Bible study and prayer. In doing so, you will get away the right way and experience the benefits of doing so.
