Out of Darkness

By Dean Honeycutt

Mitchell County

The Lord has blessed me tremendously and I just wanted to thank God for everything He has done for me. You know the Lord did not have to save me, but by His good graces, He came to where I was at and rescued me.

The Bible teaches us that we were in the “power of darkness” before we got saved. Colossians 1:13 (KJV 1900): 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Therefore, I was in a dark place as an unsaved person. I did not realize where I was at spiritually. Most people never consider their spiritual condition before God. We do not think of ourselves as being in the realm of darkness before we get saved. Could this be the reason many of us take our salvation for granted because we do not consider where God has brought us from?

To even began to wrap our minds around what God has done for us is amazing. If it were possible to see ourselves in hell, then we could begin to understand the grace of God. We have an account of this in Luke 16 about a rich man in hell who lifted his eyes in torment and saw Lazarus comforted in Abraham’s bosom. This rich man begged for a drop of water and for Lazarus to warn his five brothers of the horrible place he was in. It is obvious from this true account had the rich man been aware of the horrible terrifying place of hell he would have done anything to avoid going to this place of torment.

Only through the light of the Gospel and the conviction of the Holy Spirit are we made aware of our need for salvation. We do not come to this place of awareness on our own. By the grace of God, we are made aware of our sinful condition but rarely are we convinced of how dreadfully sinful and in darkness we are. John 3:19 (KJV 1900): 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

So, God comes into our darkness and rescues sinners out of a place we cannot get out of on our own. How does one expose what is in the dark? You expose what is in the dark by shining light into darkness. Jesus Christ is the “light of the world” and it is His light and revelation and work of the Holy Ghost that exposes and draws our sinful nature to Himself for Salvation. 1 John 2:8 (KJV 1900):  Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.”

Thank God Jesus came to where I was at in a dark place I could not get out of, and Jesus paid my sin debt on the cross of Calvary makes it possible for me to be saved. God loves you so much even when we do not even consider what He has done for us. When Jesus died on the cross there was darkness all over the land, because he was paying the penalty for my sin. The wages of sin is death, but thank God, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Have you trusted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? God can meet you where you are at today, pray to Him today confess your sin to God and ask Jesus to be the Lord of your life. Romans 10:13 (KJV 1900): 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. “
