Something To Think About – What Happens When A Preacher Preaches?

By Dennis Love

Every now and then you may hear it said that “preaching is dead” or “the day of preaching is over.”  I don’t believe that for one second.  There might be some dead preaching out there, but preaching will never be dead!  Did you hear about the preacher who used a lot of notes in his sermon?  One day he was preaching, and a gust of wind blew through the window and out went his notes through another window.  A milk cow came along and ate the preacher’s notes, and she dried up!  There may be some dead and dried up preaching out there, but the preaching of the Word of God is never a dead and dry experience.  Listen to what the Bible says happens when a preacher preaches.  “But he that prophesieth (or preaches) speaketh unto men to edification and exhortation and comfort.” (1 Corinthians 14:3)   Notice three words in this verse.  (1) Edification.  (2) Exhortation.  (3) Comfort.  God tells us in this verse what will happen when a preacher preaches.  People are going to be built up—Edified.  People are going to be cheered up—Exhorted.  People are going to be strengthened up—Comforted.  Why would anybody want to miss hearing his or her preacher preach in 2020 when God is going to use the preaching of His Word to build you up, to cheer you up and to strengthen you up!  Don’t we all need to be built up in our most holy faith?  Don’t we all need to be cheered up in our daily walk with the Lord?  Don’t we all need to experience the overwhelming comfort and peace of our Lord?

According to the Bible, preaching is far from dead.  It is very much alive and well in our churches.  Go tell your preacher to keep on preaching because you have read 1 Corinthians 14:3 and you need to be built up, cheered up and strengthened up.  Isn’t it amazing what God can and will do through the preaching of His Word!  In my opinion, that’s something to think about.
