Are You a Gnat or A Bee?

By Dennis Love

McDowell Countyare you a gnat or a bee

I’m positive you have never been asked this question until now!  Are you a Gnat or a Bee?  Most people would quickly respond by saying neither.  Nobody would really want to be a Gnat and nobody would really want to be a Bee.  But in reality, we are like one or the other.  NOW, if I were to ask my wife Vicki which she had rather be, a Gnat or a Bee—-She would look at me like I had two heads.  She doesn’t like gnats and she doesn’t like bees.  Matter-of-fact, both of them can aggravate the daylights out of you, Amen!  You know the difference between the two, don’t you?  A Gnat bounces all over the place.  One moment it will be trying to get in your ear—then it will be trying to get up your nose—then it will try to get in your eyes—and if you open your mouth, it will try to fly down your throat.  In other words, Gnats are bouncing all over the place.  They are small pesky critters that will drive you up the wall.

NOW a Bee, on the other hand, will fly straight to a flowering bush and it will stay there until it draws all the sweetness out of that bush it wants, and then it will fly away.  NOW, listen to what the Bible says in James 1:23-24 and see if you don’t see a Gnat bouncing around here.  Here’s what it says—-“For if you listen to the word of God and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.  You see yourself, you walk away, and then you forget what you look like.”  Do you see what James is saying?  He’s saying if you’re in a hurry, and you have a lot on your mind, and if you are stressed to the max, then you are going to be prone to simply take a glance at yourself in the Word of God.  BUT let’s not stop here because we need to read verse 25 and see the Bee.  James 1:25 says, “But if you look carefully into the Word of God and you do what it says and you don’t forget what you have heard, then God will bless you for doing it.”  Do you see the Bee in verse 25?  The Bee hangs around long enough to get what he needs.

Here’s the question.  Are we like that?  Are we more like a Gnat or more like a Bee when it comes to the Word of God?  Do we bounce in and bounce out?  Do we take a glancing look at the Word of God and then move on to the next thing on our “TO DO” list for the day?  Or do we hang around long enough in the Word of God to really get what we need?

Which sounds more like you?  Hey, let’s spend some time this month being more like a Bee than a Gnat.  We all need more than just a passing glance at God’s Word.  Let’s make sure we take the time to get in His Word and stay there until we get what we need.  I grant you if you really take the time to read the Christmas story slowly and carefully, the Holy Spirit will give you just what you need to get you through this COVID Christmas season.  Hey, have a great COVID Christmas folks diving into God’s Word and getting all the sweetness you need to get you through each day.  Be blessed this month folks being more like a Bee than a Gnat.  Now that’s something for all of us to think about!
