National Day of Prayer for 2021 – May 6, 2021

Mitchell County Monica and Jason Kritz National Day of Prayer 2021 Mitchell County

As we look forward to the National Day of Prayer for 2021, we are excited to announce the theme: “LORD, pour out Your Love, Life, and Liberty.” The Scripture for 2021 is 2 Corinthians 3:17, “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

2021 is the 70th year of the national observance of the National Day of Prayer. As I’ve been reading a book about the life of President Abraham Lincoln, it has been written that in 1861, in the middle of the Civil War, at the suggestion of Congress, Lincoln called for a day of nationwide prayer. The first one was on the last Thursday of November and his reason for choosing Thursday was so it would not interfere with any other religious (or holy) days already set by American churches. [“Abraham Lincoln – A Man of Faith and Courage” by Joe Wheeler, p.20] Here are some of Lincoln’s words: “…when our beloved country, once, by the blessing of God, united, prosperous, and happy, is now afflicted…and in sorrowful remembrance of our own faults and crimes as a nation and as individuals, to humble ourselves before Him, and to pray for His mercy.” Abraham Lincoln actually observed and called for 9 of these national days of prayer during his presidency.

Even as early as 1668, there were days of fasting and prayer for America, proclaimed by other presidents, preachers, governors, generals, and Congress. [For more detailed information on the history of prayer in our nation, go to the National Day of Prayer website, scroll to the bottom of the home page and click on “History of Prayer in America”.] Many times, these national days of prayer and fasting were during times of war and battles, as well as other times of crisis, such as health epidemics. Today, our war is a spiritual war. And the battle has greatly intensified in this last year. It seems as if every major area of influence in our nation has been in warfare: government, military, media, business, education, church, and the family. As with any war, it is best fought on our knees, not in the energy of the flesh but the power of GOD.

This year, in Mitchell County, let’s come together on May 6, 2021, with our hearts united in prayer…hearts crying out in repentance for our town and county, our state, and our nation. We will be observing the National Day of Prayer this year in several ways:

* WTOE 1470 AM & 101.1 FM radio    11:00 a.m.– 12:00 noon*

*A prayer walk at Riverside Park at 12:00 noon & also 6:30 p.m.*

Please share this information with your church…with your family…with your friends and neighbors.
