Life Lessons

By Doug Harrell

Keeping the main thing the main thing is the focus of my thoughts this afternoon as I sit here contemplating what to write about for Life Lessons this windy Monday afternoon.  We so often get caught up in chasing our tails round and round as we go down life’s turbulent trail.  We chase after this, then we decide we want that, and then something else tends to catch our fancy.  Many of you will remember the song about looking for love in all the wrong places and that is what we are so often inclined to do.  We go through our lives trying to reach happiness, fulfilment, contentment, self-worth or self-esteem.  We think that the big house, the big income, the prominent position, the fancy car or the beautiful mate will make us happy.  When that doesn’t work, many turn to drugs and alcohol, an extra marital affair, or something else to fill the gap in our lives.  If those things brought happiness, why do we see such disarray in the lives of the Hollywood elite, the Jet Set crowd, those things do not work folks.

The only thing that ever brings us true happiness is a relationship with our Lord and Savior and the life that comes from accepting His will and following His footsteps.  The Bible tells us that a people without a vision shall perish and to follow that vision we need wisdom, which comes from the words and instructions of our Lord, wisdom found in His path that is laid out for each of us.  Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”  We must first seek wisdom, no one can force it on us, we, you and me, must make the decision to diligently search for it.  James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”  God is faithful to keep his promises and he promises to give us wisdom if we seek and ask, the ball is in our court.  If you want to really enjoy life, follow the instructions, don’t be like many of us are, speaking to myself now, and try everything before we take the time to read the instructions.  Proverbs 3:13 “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding.”  The rewards are everlasting and eternal, don’t miss them.  Focus on keeping the main thing the main thing!  God Bless.
