The Bad News Bears

Do you ever wonder why so many enjoy watching movies like the Bad News Bears, The Sandlot, The Replacements, The Mighty Ducks, Little Giants and so many others of that genre?
It’s because the story is the same. It’s generally about a group of rag-tag losers who team up with a coach that believes in them and somehow they find a way to win the big game. We love that.
That’s why the story of Israel is so compelling. For the last 3500 years or so they have been the rag-tag team that the whole world has been relentlessly attacking. They should have been wiped out centuries ago, yet they’re still here. How have they done it? They’ve got a great coach. He made a promise to their charter member (Abraham) a long time ago, “I will make you into a great nation”. So who gets the glory? The Coach.
He made another promise to the Church, “But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” 1Peter 2:9.
We have been chosen for the team too. The exciting thing is that the more awkward or insignificant we are, the greater glory our coach gets. He seems to like that.
So instead of whining or complaining that we aren’t as talented, wealthy, or good-looking as others, we should rejoice that in living our lives as “losers” we have a better chance of bringing glory to our coach than anybody else. Paul noticed this too. “Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.” 1 Cor. 1:26.
In other words, God generally uses people just like us. Let’s live our lives to give glory to Him.
