Would Jesus Own a Smartphone?

By Toddy Abraham

Athens, TennesseeTodd Abraham

Do you check it all throughout the day? Do you talk on it incessantly? Do you scroll for hours on it? Is your mind geared 24/7 for those dings, alerts, notifications, and bells from that little device? Do you neglect your children because of it? Do you shove it in your kid’s face like some kind of electronic babysitter so you don’t have to put up with them at times? Do you depend on it to teach your kids things? Do you endanger yourself and others while driving because you are distracted by it? Do you and your spouse neglect each other because of it? Does it separate you and your family at your dinner outings? Do you ever use it to help in your efforts as a Christian to win souls, praise God for His goodness in your life, and learn more about the scriptures? Do you sleep with it? Do you check it first thing in the morning before thanking the Lord for opening your eyes and giving you another day on this planet? Do you notice yourself getting entranced by it and losing track of time? Has the Lord convicted you of this little device because you and He both know it has become an idol to you? Have you had the audacity to lie to God and yourself and others around you saying you can’t live without it? How many times during your work day do you check it and how much has it decreased your productivity? Have you figured out by now what I’m referring to?

How ‘smart’ actually is your phone? Well, it can’t do one wit more than any other computer such as a laptop or desktop with very few exceptions. But laptops and desktop computers don’t keep your mind in a 24/7 constant state of distraction either. What exactly can a smartphone do? It can take pictures, right? Researchers have proven that people suffer from image overload because of smartphones. It can let you communicate with so many people on different platforms 24/7. And what good is that? More useless information overload. True friends are few and far between and those we call friends in most cases on social media are nothing more than acquaintances; if that. How much useful information that is actually fruit-bearing do you actually glean from your ‘smart’ phone? How many times have you almost wrecked and died because of it? How much has it increased your anxiety because of all that extra interaction you’ve taken on that is completely unnecessary? What could you accomplish with a laptop and digital camera that you couldn’t with a smartphone? But without the 24/7 pull, it creates in your mind. Have you ever truly prayed earnestly and asked God Almighty, whom you say is your Father in heaven, if your smartphone is indeed an idol to you and be willing to accept the truth? And if He shows you that it is, be willing to repent and get rid of it and go back to a basic phone.

A lot of questions eh? Only questions God put on my heart to ask you. Remember, Todd’s Techy Tips is for those of you who say you are Christians, and only you! Personally, I say do what you want to. But if you claim to be a Christian and truly desire to live in total obedience to the Lord, then I earnestly exhort you to listen to every word and prayerfully consider it. Because God Almighty is Who laid it on my heart to preach against smartphones. And no I do not own one myself. You can get mad at me if you want to and personally, I don’t care. My obligation as a preacher of the gospel is to tell you THE truth and not to be afraid of your faces (i.e. countenance). Meaning what you think. The simple truth is that smartphones are sending many a soul to hell and a great many of those are Christians. It’s the number 1 idol and addiction in the world today by far. However, you would do well to remember that God is NO respecter of persons no matter what you profess to be. I also know that not everyone who owns a smartphone is idolatrous of it but that number is very few and far between. Exodus 20:3 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” If the shoe fits, wear it. Or in this case, take it off.
