National Day of Prayer 2024

Prayer was a major part of the beginning of our nation. And even today, every year on the first Thursday in May, the National Day of Prayer is observed in America. There have been many important days of prayer in the history of our nation. At the beginning of a new America, there were “Days of Prayer” against attacks, times of drought, and threats of battle. Some of the early states that were forming to build our nation proclaimed Days of Prayer and Fasting, including Connecticut, Virginia, Massachusetts, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. These date back to as early as 1668.

In 1775, the Continental Congress declared March 6, 1776, to be a “Day of Fasting, Prayer and Humiliation” in order to ask The LORD’s forgiveness of sins and also to ask for His blessings. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln set aside a “National Day of Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer” to confess our national sins and return to GOD. In 1952, President Truman declared the National Day of Prayer to be observed every year. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday in May.

National Day of Prayer

12:00 noon at Riverside Park Amphitheater

&

6:30 p.m. at Bakersville Creek Walk

You may wonder if the National Day of Prayer is significant in today’s world. The answer is a definite “yes”! It reminds us to look back at our beginnings as a nation, as leaders recognized they needed GOD’s wisdom for every step they made. As stated on the National Day of Prayer website, “It stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people. The unanimous passage of the bill establishing the National Day of Prayer as an annual event signifies that prayer is as important to our nation today as it was in the beginning.”

A former chairman, Mrs. Shirley Dobson, is quoted as saying, “We have lost many of our freedoms in America because we have been asleep. I feel if we do not become involved and support the annual National Day of Prayer, we could end up forfeiting this freedom too.”

***Please come & invite friends and neighbors! Let’s come together and join our hearts together in prayer for our nation, the United States of America, “one nation under God”!
