The Bible has several messages that at first glance seem to be contradictory. For instance, Proverbs tells us to consider the ant and work hard to prepare for an unknown future. At the same time, Jesus tells us in the sermon on the mount not to worry about what we are to eat or drink, and that our heavenly Father knows what we need and will provide for us. Paul tells us that “I have become all things to all men so that I might win some to the Lord”. Yet James says that “anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world, becomes an enemy of God”.

We are told to fully plan ahead before starting a business venture to make sure we can complete it. Yet we are also told not to say “we’re going to do this or that tomorrow” but rather say “if it’s the Lord’s will…”.

Why the apparent contradictions? I believe it’s because there is more than one personality type that God is trying to reach. Anybody that has raised more than one child knows that with some you have to wallop them to get their attention and others only take a raised eyebrow.

So what about you? Are you by nature a lazy person? Then you need to focus on the ants. Are you just the opposite, a workaholic? Then you need to consider the lilies and stop trying to do it all yourself. Rest in the Lord.

Most importantly, when it comes to our salvation, those of us who take it too cavalierly need to read the verses that give us a kick in the seat of the pants (Jas. 1:21, 2:24), Others who are always worrying that God is mad at them or that they have committed the unpardonable sin need to focus on the scriptures that show God’s unconditional love for his children regardless of our failures (Rom. 5:15-17 and the Psalms).

Remember God desires to comfort the afflicted as well as to afflict the comfortable. Know who you are and look for God’s message to you!
