31 Days of Repentance

Day 3: Forgive me for being critical.
Do these statements sound familiar: “You’re not wearing that shirt, are you? “Did you try to give yourself a haircut?” “Did you re-arrange my grocery list?” “Why did you park the car there?” “Just let me unload the dishwasher. I can’t find anything when you unload it.”
Nobody likes to be around someone with a critical spirit, that person who is always criticizing. The word, “criticize” in Webster’s Dictionary is defined as “to find fault with; to judge critically; to blame.” When we criticize, we are finding fault in others and their behavior. When we criticize others, we are really saying, “Why don’t you do things ‘my’ way?”
Sometimes this critical spirit is a result of being hurt by others. When someone hurts us or criticizes, it becomes a “defense mechanism” to hurt others in the same way they hurt us. However, we need to ask ourselves, “When someone criticizes me, does it hurt? How does it make me feel?” When we can honestly look at this behavior, it changes our view. In other words, think about how another person feels if you are critical of them. JESUS said in Luke 6:31, “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.”
Challenge:
*Let’s dig a little deeper. Will you personally admit to seeing this behavior in yourself? Ask THE HOLY SPIRIT to lead you and speak to you and point out an area in your life that you may have not been aware of, an area that you are being critical. Too often, we can see it in others, but not in ourselves. Recognize it. Admit it. Make a change, while asking for THE HOLY SPIRIT’s guidance.
