31 Days of Repentance

By Monica Kritz

Day 14:  Forgive me for not being willing to take instruction or advice.

Why do we refuse to get help from others?  Why do we insist on “our own way”?

2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”.  This gives us a reason for the importance of GOD’s Word, The Bible.  The Bible is “profitable” – it helps us.  “Reproof” in the Greek translation means “conviction” – it convicts us.     “Correction” in the Greek language is “to set right again; correct” – it corrects us.  It is also good for “instruction.”  If we dislike instruction or advice, then we are saying that we don’t like The Bible, which is packed full of wisdom and advice for our everyday lives.

Have you ever assembled anything?  Did you try to do it without following the instructions?  There is a reason for the instructions being included in the box.  In a similar way, why would GOD make us and then leave us without any help…no instructions…to get through this life with all of its’ crazy twists and turns.  The Bible tells us, “Pride goeth before destruction,…” (Proverbs 16:18)  This is an instruction to us, but if we have too much pride to ask anyone for help…even GOD, our Creator…then it is certain we will have destruction.

Instead, let’s take the advice of king Hezekiah.  Read 2 Kings 19:14-19 and Isaiah 37:14-20.  Hezekiah had a problem, and he took it to THE LORD.  GOD heard his prayer.  (2 Kings 19:20)  So let’s take our problems to THE LORD.  Be serious.  Be sincere.  Ask HIM.  Also, we can ask the advice of wise CHRISTian friends…those who have had some experience…those who trust THE LORD and are consistent and faithful to HIM.  See Proverbs 1:8.

If we will receive the instruction of GOD, we will be “thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”  (2 Timothy 3:17)

Challenge:

* Pray.  Don’t be afraid.  Take that first step and ask GOD for help.  You won’t believe the feeling of peace and freedom that comes after you do this.

* Look for the word “instruction” through the book of Proverbs.  See how many times you can find it. Use the KJV for this exercise.
