The Master of the Sea
By Tammy Hopson

A group of seagulls fly overhead their voices letting out a series of high-pitched cries understood by no man. Their voices suddenly hush as they touch down along the ocean shore taking a reprieve from their flight.
A roar of thunder is heard in the distance in deep baritone booms causing the seagulls to suddenly return to the sky. Their same loud cries fill the air and then slowly become quieter and quieter as they disappear from sight. The wind whistles behind them as if their wings have interrupted it, cutting through it and disturbing its pattern.
Two little children run and laugh in the waves giggling as the ocean mist sprays their smiling faces and the sea bellows as the waves mount high and then gently crash back down. Over and over again they sound, one and then another and another, each wave echoing the one before it.
Standing before this mighty sea, I listen to this symphony of creation. These sounds play for me a song. It is a ballad orchestrated by My Father, its melody reaching deep inside my heart and reminding me that He is not only its composer but the Creator of its instruments. Serenaded by this glorious harmony, I stand in awe, as I hear my Creator whisper its lyric….“Know that I am here….HEAR ME.”
My eyes gaze out over the ocean surface, the deep hue of the water meets the sky out on the horizon, as a mix of puffy clouds and bold gray thunderheads sit on its edge.
The white waves crest reaching high towards the sky. I watch their tips curl and then roll back down again disappearing into the water.
Looking out over this mighty Atlantic I am struck by its vastness. I know what this ocean holds. Creatures great and small are being fed and kept alive by the resources it provides. Millions of living things, all unique in design and color swim within its boundaries. I have seen the saltwater fish that abide here, their colors are vibrant and strong, each one differing from the other as if they were all individually detailed and carefully hand-crafted.
Sea shells now lie along the shore, their soft pastel tones blending beautifully with the sand. The waves wash bits of green seaweed ashore and then carry them back out to sea again as if they are needed to carpet the ocean floor.
Rays of light force themselves out between the clouds, lighting up the world beneath them and announcing that the sun is present.
My eyes behold this magnificent display. It is a work of art, a grand design meant for us to look upon with wonder and fascination. Each color and each shape is wonderfully created for our enjoyment and delight. Surrounded by beauty, my heart overflows knowing that not only do I have the joy of seeing this masterpiece, but I have the privilege of knowing The Artist.
The symphony continues to play the glorious ballad of creation as God’s Spirit adds yet another lyric to the song…. “Know that I am here….SEE ME.”
A salty breeze blows in off the water embracing me with its warmth. The wind blows in the ocean waves smoothing the sand into softly spun silk beneath me. I bury my feet down deep into its layers feeling its heat. A light foam has wrapped itself around my ankles and tiny little bubbles dance around tickling my skin. Looking down I see this wave has uncovered a sea shell hidden beneath the sand. Picking it up I trace my fingertips along the groves of this shell. The outside is rough and rigged but the inside is smooth as glass.
A cloud bursts and the heavens begin to spray a tropical mist. Bigger raindrops fall and soon I am soaked. Small droplets fall from the ends of my hair and trickle onto my face, cooling my cheeks. Another ocean breeze blows in warming me again and I smile. The Master and Maker of it all is making Himself known through His creation and the melody of its beautiful love song continues to play as the last lyric is added….“Know that I am here….. FEEL ME.”
Surrounded by the sound, sight, and feel of this ocean, I stand on the shore. Still smiling as joy rings loudly in my heart I am compelled to whisper back to My Creator…Yes, Lord,….I HEAR YOU…. I SEE YOU…..and I FEEL YOU in this place.
