Light

For the first time that I can ever remember, I had my Christmas tree up well before Thanksgiving. I usually wait For the first time that I can ever remember, I had my Christmas tree up well before Thanksgiving. I usually wait until the Saturday after Thanksgiving to put up my tree, decorate while listening to Christmas music, and burn candles that engulf my house in cinnamon and cloves.

This year, I just couldn’t wait. It’s not that I wanted Thanksgiving to be over or for Christmas to get here any quicker. I believe I just needed some comfort that comes from the light of a Christmas tree.

There’s something about the shadows it casts on the walls; The warmth, that comes from the glow of lights. It soothes my soul. For me, Christmastime brings with it the excitement of being with family, seeing the sparkle in my kids and grandkids eyes, and giving gifts of love, as the Wisemen once did. The anticipation of being able to celebrate Jesus’ birth. We now have the promise of a future, because of this day long ago.

In the Christmas story, there are many instances of light. The light from the “glory of the Lord shone round about” the shepherds.  The light from the Star of Bethlehem was guiding the Wisemen to that little baby born in Bethlehem. That baby, who came to be The Light of the World. Jesus also calls us to be that light for others. We can be a comfort during others’ storms of life, by loving like Jesus loved. In that process, hopefully we can help guide them to see the path to our Savior. He is the ultimate comfort and light in the darkness.  Like the little children’s song, This Little Light of Mine, don’t hide your light under a bushel or let Satan blow it out. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. Jesus calls us to be a light in this dark world.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16 KJV
