Impacting Culture for Eternity

As we celebrate another year of our nation’s history this month, we rejoice in the freedom with which we have been blessed as citizens of this great nation. Our hearts are filled with thanks to the many who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice so much in order to preserve the freedom we have in America. As citizens of this land, we have the responsibility to maintain the freedom for which so many have sacrificed. We dare not take it for granted or be indifferent regarding it, for such attitudes will inevitably lead to the loss of freedom.

But as a Christian, my heart is burdened greatly over the spiritual state of America. The news is filled with violence each and every day. Each day seems to be filled with senseless acts of violence and crime. This nation that once valued the teachings of the Word of God no longer regards God’s instruction as binding.  As a whole, America is a nation that has rejected God and His Word.

In such a society, it is vital that believers commit to the truths of God’s Word in order to make the impact God desires. Believers have the responsibility to follow certain clear teachings of the Word of God:

  1. Believers must pray for their leaders. Paul instructed Timothy, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” (1 Timothy 1:1-2). We have the responsibility as believers to continually pray for our leaders.
  2. Believers must submit to governmental authority. Regardless of one’s political preference, we have the responsibility to submit to all authority God has placed over us. Romans 13:1-2 teaches, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever, therefore, resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.” It is vital that we submit to their authority unless it causes us to violate a clear command of Scripture (Acts 5:29).
  3. Believers must strive to live distinct lives. Without a doubt, our society is becoming increasingly corrupt. As society continues to turn its back on God, society will continue to get darker and darker with each successive generation. It is time that God’s people truly embrace the importance of living a holy and therefore distinct life in the midst of our society. Matthew 5:16 teaches, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Our light as believers should continue to shine brighter as society gets darker.

As believers living in this great nation, let’s resolve to put these few principles into our daily practice. Only then will God truly be honored by those professing to name Him as their Savior. Let’s do our part to turn the tide for God.
