GOD is Our Umbrella

On the morning that Hurricane Helene hit our small town, I was sitting on the bed having my prayer time with The Lord. Our house shook, the winds roared, and trees twisted. Could this be a tornado? But we don’t have tornadoes in the mountains…do we? Certainly, I had never been in a storm such as this. My husband, who is from Florida, had been through several hurricanes but nothing like this. Here in western North Carolina, we were in the eye of the storm. Suddenly, we heard and felt a crash! A giant oak tree had fallen through our roof into the bedroom closet, just inches away from our bed!
The Bible tells us: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.” (Psalm 46:1-3) This passage is especially amazing in light of what we are going through because of this destructive storm. God reminds us that He holds us and helps us during such troubled times.
There are so many beautiful stories coming out of this storm. One friend told me about finding her daughter’s pink Scooby Doo umbrella laying beside the road…and open! The umbrella was perfectly intact, not broken! This had washed out of their storage shelter, which had been flooded. She could only praise God for placing this small “treasure of the heart” where she could see it! It was very sentimental for her since her daughter is grown and married and serving as a missionary in a foreign country.
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10) As we ponder these words from God and His Word and as we go through the recovery process, let us remember…God is our umbrella.
On a special note to all of our citizens in our beautiful little town, we want you to know we truly are praying for you…those who have lost family members and friends, those who have lost homes, those who have lost businesses, those who have lost every material possession, and those who are just grieving the loss of all of this destruction. Please don’t give up. Keep looking to The Lord. Stay in His Word. And to all of the workers, the volunteers, the emergency workers, the churches, the ministries, and all of the special agencies, we say “thank you, thank you” from the bottom of our hearts. May The Lord help and equip us as we try to move forward, one day at a time…for His glory! And remember…even amid loss, we do have much that cannot be taken away…The Lord’s presence in our hearts and joy, peace, and love!
