Life’s Winters

Job 37:10 “By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened (confined).”
Sun shimmering on water graces any day with its stunning beauty, but the sheen on frozen water carries its own glory. The wintery rays shone on the frozen water of the large fountain in the small-town plaza, and the opaque ice muted the glow of the sun’s brilliance. The sun and ice both revealed the glory of Job 37:10. God’s very breath brings us the beauty of a sunny wintry day that is filled with His goodness. Children seemed oblivious to the cold. Others braved nippy winds, clutching heavy coats as they scurried down long sidewalks. But all were being blessed by the breath of God.
The fountain in Valdese, NC sits serenely inside the Piedmont town and offers a stunning sight on an icy cold day. The sun glints off the ice, but you can hear the water still bubbling underneath as the top-frozen layers catch the sun’s rays and toss them into the crisp air. The frozen fountain reminded me of God’s Son-Jesus-bringing the sunshine of His love and presence into our lives, melting the ice of our life’s winters and tossing the glory of those troubles into eternity as the following verse affirms. 2 Corinthians 4:17 says, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;”
When we experience the icy frozen waters of fear, sorrow, and depression as they insidiously cover our lives, remember this. The Son still shines His glory on the worst parts of our lives and brings, not the blinding rays of a summer day, but the muted glow of His glory on our afflictions. His Word will not return void. As we bask in its glow, the ice disappears, and the waters fill with food for our souls. Jesus redeems our trials, suffusing them with His glory and tossing them into eternity!
