Quincy Hall of the United States triumphed in the men’s 400-meter final at the 2024 Summer Olympics, bringing the gold medal back to the U.S. in a race filled with drama and determination. Hall’s remarkable comeback at the Stade de France showcased his resilience and tenacity, qualities that have marked his career.

For most of the race, Hall appeared out of contention, lagging in sixth place for the first 200 meters. Even as he approached the final 100 meters, he was still trailing in fourth place. However, Hall’s relentless drive saw him surge forward, overtaking Great Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith just before the finish line to claim victory.

Hall attributed his win to sheer grit and determination, emphasizing that he never gives up. He acknowledged the intense competition from Hudson-Smith, who won silver, and bronze medalist Muzala Samukonga of Zambia, noting their fast start to the race.

This victory was particularly sweet for Hall, who had been bested by Hudson-Smith at last year’s World Championships. The final 50 meters of the race proved crucial, with Hall managing to gain a crucial step on Hudson-Smith to secure the gold.

The race was historic, featuring the three fastest times recorded worldwide this year and placing them among the seven fastest times ever recorded at an Olympics. Hudson-Smith praised Hall, acknowledging his exceptional athleticism and the competitive spirit he brought to the race.

For decades, American runners dominated the men’s 400-meter race, winning seven consecutive Olympics from 1984 through 2008. However, the U.S. had struggled in recent years, placing third only once since then. Hall’s victory marks a significant comeback for the U.S., securing the 20th Olympic gold in this event’s history.

Hall’s winning time of 43.4 seconds was a personal best for the 26-year-old and the fifth-fastest time ever recorded. After his victory, Hall celebrated with a victory lap around the stadium, proudly draped in the American flag.

Reflecting on his journey, Hall revealed that he knew he had won as soon as the starting gun fired. His win exemplified the signature comebacks of Team USA at the Paris track and field events, joining the ranks of sprinter Noah Lyles and 1500-meter champion Cole Hocker, who also claimed gold in dramatic fashion earlier in the week.

Originally a hurdler and an NCAA champion in the 400-meter hurdles at the University of South Carolina, Hall’s switch to the 400-meter race two years ago proved to be the best decision of his life. He will compete in one more event at this Olympics, the men’s 4×400-meter relay race, with the heats beginning on Friday and the final on Saturday.
