Scissors, Paper, and Little Hands

My little granddaughter loves to stay with me and Pam. And we love it when she stays with us. But she is a handful because she is so active. Her attention span is short and so she plays with one thing for a little while and then she is going to do something else that will entertain her for a while. She is highly active and inquisitive. You must keep an eye on her, or she will be into something that may be harmful to her. She rode a toy car off our porch and crashed at be bottom of the steps. Thankfully, she was okay.

One time she got into a drawer with scissors and paper. This is where she does her “work” as she calls it. And she proceeded to cut the paper into little bitty pieces and the pieces fell onto the floor. When it was time to eat lunch and have a drink she wanted, I told her she had to pick up the paper first and that she was the one who made the mess and needed to clean it up. I could see the tears gathering in her eyes as she thought about what I said to her. She knew that she needed to do what was right and clean up her mess. So, with her little hands, she got down on the floor and picked up the pieces of paper.

My heart melted as I saw her feeling sorrow for making a mess and realizing she was responsible for it.

How true it is for us when we sin against God, and we make a mess. The pieces of sin are in our lives, and we know we are responsible. And that still small voice of the Holy Spirit says you need to clean that up. And with contrition and sorrow for what we have done, we ask God for forgiveness. And God says, “I love you and I forgive you.” I am confident that our Father in Heaven is grateful when He sees our sorrow and brokenness over sin. I am so grateful the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sins and moves in our hearts to repent and turn from our sins.

I am grateful for a compassionate and merciful God that loves us and died on the cross for our sins.

God bless you,

Pastor Dean Honeycutt
