Using Scripture for Evangelism

The Word of God is powerful. In Hebrews 4:12, Paul says it is “sharper than any double-edged sword.” As believers, we should depend on the Bible to help us grow, mature, and become more like Jesus Christ.
The Scripture is also a critical tool for us to use when we share our faith. Think about it. We cannot share the Gospel without pointing to the Gospel. The Word of God shows us the path to eternal life. All we have to do is share it with others.
“The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Like any gift, eternal life is not earned or deserved. The Bible tells us that we are saved through faith, not our works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Every other religion teaches that people must earn their way to Heaven. Christianity alone proclaims that God’s favor and entrance into Heaven are absolutely free.
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
The Bible states that man is a sinner. Sin is anything that falls short of God’s perfect standard: an action, a word, a thought, an attitude. Because we are sinners, we cannot save ourselves.
God “does not leave the guilty unpunished.” (Exodus 34:7)
God is merciful and does not want to punish us. The Bible tells us that “God is love” (1 John 4:8), but it also teaches us that He is just and must punish our sin. This presents a problem. The problem is not God’s, it is ours.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…” (John 3:16)
God sent us a solution: Jesus Christ. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin…and rose from the dead to prove He had purchased a place in Heaven for us.
“Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.” (Acts 16:31)
Faith isn’t simply knowing about Jesus. It also isn’t trusting in Jesus for temporary things, like health, safety, and finances. Saving faith is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for eternal life.
Remember, each verse, alone, maybe a lot for someone to process, especially for someone who has never read the Bible. Quoting Scripture can come across as overbearing. While as Christians, we should know each reference, we don’t need to show off our knowledge of the Bible. Simply say, “the Bible says,” or “We read in the Bible,” and then quote the verse. Let the words of the Scripture sink in. The Holy Spirit will speak to the person who is hearing the words.
Be patient. Sometimes, it takes time for the meaning of the Word of God to absorb. If they are not ready to decide to follow Jesus, allow them time to think over what you shared. Plan to meet with them again to ask questions or share how God is speaking to them personally.
Continue to pray that they will come to know the truth that will set them free.
