Don’t Be Know It All

Howdy,
A great lesson I have learned in the pastorate is that good godly advice from good godly people is twenty-four-karat gold. The Bible tells us if we expect to get Wisdom we must search for it. However I have made many mistakes in my ministry, and I probably would have made many more if I had not listened to godly counsel. The Bible says in Proverbs 24:5,6 “A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength. 6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.”
Tommy Bolt was one of the greatest golfers of all time, but he had a major flaw, he had a violent temper. You know that professional golfers play with a caddie, who is there to offer advice as well as carry clubs. One time Bolt was having a bad round in a tournament and told his caddie to say “Yes, Mr. Bolt” or “No, Mr. Bolt” and to keep his advice to himself.
Bolt hit his first shot and it appeared to land behind a tree. When they reached the spot, Bolt asked his caddie, “Do you think I should use a five-iron?” Obeying orders, the caddie replied. “No Mr. Bolt” but Bolt hit the five-iron anyway and made an unbelievable shot that landed on the green just a few feet from the whole.
He turned to the caddie and proudly said, “What did you think about that shot?” As the caddie picked up the bag and headed toward the green he said, “It wasn’t your ball, Mr. Bolt.” Wise people know that it pays to seek the advice of others.
I have five steps to the wisdom that I think will help all of us when seeking to make the right choices in life. 1st We should listen to those who disagree with us. 2nd We should listen to those who love us. 3rd We should listen to those who have achieved the spiritual success we desire for our own lives. 4th We should listen to those who have godly wisdom and insight into God’s Word. 5th And the most important, we should daily depend on God’s Spirit and humbly submit to the authority of His Perfect Word. Jesus said in John 14:26 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” Just how teachable are you? Are you wise or otherwise?

Words of Wisdom
- Start with what is right rather than what is acceptable. Franz Kafka
- A day of worry is more exhausting than a week of work. John Lubbock
- From the errors of others, a wise man corrects his own. N/A
- Proverbs 1:7- “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” King Solomon
- Proverbs 4:7 “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” King Solomon
How Not To Lose It.
In the supermarket, a man was pushing a cart that contained a screaming, bellowing baby. The gentleman kept repeating softly, “Don’t get excited, Albert. Don’t scream, Albert. Don’t yell, Albert. Keep calm, Albert.” A woman standing next to him said, “You certainly are to be commended for trying to soothe your son Albert.” The man looked at her and said, “Lady, I’m Albert.”
Show And Tell
A kindergarten teacher gave her class a “show and tell” assignment of bringing something to represent their religion.
The first boy got in front of the class and said, “My name is Benjamin and I am Jewish and this is the Star of David.”
The second boy got in front of the class and said, “My name is Mary. I am Catholic and this is the Crucifix.”
The third boy got in front of the class and said, ” My name is Tommy and I am Baptist and this is a casserole.”
