Questioning God During Israel Attacks – The Answer is Not Always Clear

Israel: On Oct. 7th, all eyes turned to Israel. The Palestinian terrorist group Hamas poured out of Gaza and brought all unholy terror on Israeli families and revelers, dragging hostages over the border and into eternal darkness.
Babies were slaughtered and burned in front of their parents. People were mowed down, burned in their cars, raped, tormented and taken.
Hamas filmed and then released the carnage. The footage and photos were burned into the minds of millions around the world.
Everything slowed down with shock and Israel sped up. They activated thousands of reservists and bombed Hamas strongholds in Gaza.
As cities and nations across the world showed their support of The Holy Land, the United States pledged their eternal support of Israel, sending the USS Gerald R Ford Carrier Strike Group as well as its accompanying warships, with more on the way.
More footage came out, as parents and other relatives spoke of their destroyed family members or ones that were trapped as hostages.
One man wept and thanked God that his young daughter was dead and not captive in Gaza. How will they ever be the same?
Prayer vigils broke out in New York, Miami, Germany, and Paris lit up the Eiffel Tower with the Israeli Flag along with others around the world.
By Hamas, Global terror was threatened on Friday the 13th – The Day of Rage.
College students across America started marching in protest of Israel’s retaliation. Verbally denying them the right to hunt down Hamas.
A student at UNC-Chapel Hill designed an anti-Israel flyer with a paraglider on it. That was the way many terrorists entered Israel on that fateful day – the last thing some victims saw.
They were young victims celebrating at a festival.
Christians and Jews alike prayed for God’s country and others began to ask, “Where was God?”
The question has been asked throughout history. The Black Plague, the World Wars, and the Holocaust to name a few.
In fact, the Black Plague caused a shift in Europe’s faith in God overall. The Catholic Church had been unable to help them.
The book, “God on Trial,” by Peter Irons addresses the question of why God did not intervene in the Holocaust.
In the book and subsequent movie, prisoners in Auschwitz put God on trial one cold night in the middle of the Holocaust.
They shouted, cried, shared their stories, wept for their children, and mulled through the memorized Torah. A Rabbi named “The Living Torah” was with them. Others quoted the Torah too.
These were not bad people who deserved God’s wrath. That is not an answer.
The PBS announcer to the film on the book, “God on Trial,” said, “The questions multiplied but the answer was silence.”
Silence is a hard pill to swallow in times of atrocities. We always have prayer and the Word of God. But we must remember that our answers come in the Bible and turn our hearts and minds there. Screaming in your own head will get you nowhere. God’s peace is in the Word.
We have the Sermon on the Mount and the Lord’s Prayer, but when it comes to why on horror, God is vague. You have Job and other places, but we are not permitted to explore the mind of God on such matters.
In Isaiah 55:8, God says, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,”
God also promises us that someday evil will be cast away, “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you accursed people, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels” in Matthew 25:41.
When it comes to God’s justice on Earth for God’s people, that is promised too, we just don’t know when. His time is also not the same as ours.
In Isaiah 49:26, God says “Yes the captives will be taken from warriors, and plunder received from the fierce. I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh. They will be drunk on their own blood, as with wine.”
So, we the faithful and the ill-informed in such matters, must lose our anger, embrace humility and just pray to the Lord God Almighty, “Please protect Israel and the beautiful children on both sides. Amen.”
