Side by Side a World Champion

Daily, before the doors open at Burke United Christian Ministries, Chad Curley, maintenance man for Burke Charitable Properties is fast at work ensuring the floors are shining in the soup kitchen and the showers are hot, clean, and ready for neighbors who are in need. Although you work side by side with someone daily you often do not know their story. Recently the staff here learned that we were in the midst of a world champion. Chad is a four-time gold medal world champion powerlifter and is a nine-year Special Olympics Competitor. In the 1994 Watauga Democrat Chad’s coach Treadaway stated “You can tell him to do something and he’ll do it, no matter how hard it hurts, and he’s a great listener. You don’t have to tell him the same thing twice.” This continues to ring true today!
At the top of his powerlifting career Chad could:
- Deadlift 400 pounds
- Squat 420 pounds
- Bench press 280
As it states in Ephesians 3 Chad has been given the ability to do immeasurably more….through the one that gives us all strength. During this season of celebrating Olympians around the world, I hope that we will look for the champions all around us.
